Is my rate guaranteed?

Rates are guaranteed as initially confirmed. However, rate is subject to change if the reservation is modified in any regard.

For how long will Payless hold my confirmed vehicle?

It is the policy of Payless to have the confirmed vehicle available for a period of up to two hours after the scheduled arrival time with the exception of any reservations confirmed for pickup within the last hour of operation. For those reservations the vehicle will be held for one hour. It is the customer's responsibility to notify our reservation center at 1-800-Payless or the location directly of any delays prior to the time of arrival. This will ensure that the location continues to hold the vehicle. Failure to do so will result in the release of the vehicle.

How do I change or cancel my reservation?

Call the 1.800.PAYLESS toll-free number 24 hours a day or send us an e-mail though the Webmaster on this site.

Can the car be driven out of the state where it is rented?

A rental vehicle may not be allowed to travel anywhere the renter desires. The use of the vehicle is restricted to the state where rented, unless noted otherwise on the rental agreement.

Do I have to rent the car for a certain period of time?

A rental is a minimum of one-day (24 hours). The maximum number of days of a rental is governed by the rental agreement. A customer who desires to rent longer than previously confirmed must return to the location to rewrite the rental agreement. It must be understood that the extension is subject to fleet availability and may not be granted.

What is required in order to qualify for a rental?

Renter and any authorized driver(s) must have a valid Drivers License in their own name. The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period. In addition, International Renters/Authorized driver(s) must have a valid driver's license from their country of origin. A Valid International Driver's Permit will be required, if license of origin is not in English, and a valid passport.

All Payless Car Rental locations require a valid, major credit card in the renter's name in order to rent the vehicle. Debit/check cards will not be accepted for qualification purpose, but may be applied at time of return as a method of payment. Renter would be required to qualify with an acceptable credit card at time of rental.

Proof of personal automobile insurance may be required. See individual location policies for more information.

Cash rental policies, deposit requirements and procedures vary by location and may not be available at all locations. Information can be obtained by contacting the location directly.

Will Payless charge my credit card at time of rental?

Renting location will require the renter to have an available credit line at time of rental. The amount held is based on many factors and will vary from location to location.

Does Payless Car Rental require drivers license checks to qualify for rental?

Payless Car Rental may perform a driver's license check and may deny a rental car based on a negative driving record.

What is the minimum age to qualify for rental?

Driver must be 25 years of age unless specified, otherwise in specific location policy. Where applicable by law, locations will charge an underage fee for anyone under 25 years of age.

What is my responsibility to the rental vehicle?

The renter assumes all responsibility for the vehicle while it is on rent. The renter is responsible for the safe return of the rental car in the same condition as it was rented, except for normal wear and tear. Where state law permits, the renting location will hold the renter responsible for all damage, regardless of fault, should the vehicle be damaged, stolen or vandalized.

The renter will be required to inspect the vehicle, both interior and exterior, prior to leaving the rental property. And, would be required to note on the vehicle inspection slip or rental agreement any existing damage.

What if I get a traffic violation while in possession of a Payless rental vehicle?

The renter of any car is liable for all parking and traffic violations both domestically and internationally.

Do I have to purchase collision or liability?

At all Payless locations in the Continental U.S. CDW is optional. Payless customers cannot be required to purchase CDW. We expect each customer to have a personal auto policy that will cover our vehicle. If a customer does not have a personal auto policy that covers our vehicle, we may elect to refuse to rent to that person. However, we may not require that a customer purchase a damage waiver just because the customer fails to have insurance.CDW is always the customer’s option.

When a vehicle is rented from Payless and subject to certain restrictions and limitations under the laws of the applicable jurisdiction. The customer is fully responsible for any loss or damage to the rental vehicle, regardless of cause. Where Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is offered and accepted by the customer for an additional (see specific location policy) daily (or partial day)/weekly charge, Payless waives all or part (as indicated in the specific locations policy or on the rental agreement at time of rental) of the customers liability for damages to the vehicle provided the terms and conditions of the rental agreement are not violated. CDW is offered only where permitted by law. CDW cost varies by location and may not be offered at all locations.

Before leaving home, check your personal automobile insurance policy to see if it covers a rental vehicle for collision, liability, loss of use and administrative costs associated with vehicle damage. Valid proof of insurance may be required at time of rental to cover the vehicle. See individual location policies for more information.

At international locations if, at the time of rental, the customer cannot present proof of coverage for loss or damage to the rental vehicle, he/she may be required to purchase CDW as a condition of rental.

Credit card coverage's. Some credit cards offer protection to their card members. Many times, this protection is not "primary" and is supplemental to your own personal coverage. This "Secondary" coverage will give you protection benefits over and above the "primary" coverage. For information on your specific credit card, please call the toll free number on the backside of your credit card and inquiry directly.

May I make a right-hand turn at a red traffic light?

The number one question of first time rental customers arriving in Ireland from North America is "May we make a right-hand turn at a red traffic light?" The answer is a definite and emphatic "No!" In nations where one drives on the left, any right turn onto a two-way roadway requires that the turning driver cross traffic moving from right-to-left, not the familiar left-to-right. To make a right-turn-on-red puts one in immediate danger of a deadly head-on or side-impact collision.

When making any right turn, always slowly come to a full stop, even in the absence of traffic controls in order to determine that the roadway is (or is not) a one-way or two-way roadway. It is better to err on the side of caution and have a driver behind sound the horn, rather than make a fatal error.

In which lane do I pass?

Slower traffic keeps to the left. The "fast lane" for passing (overtaking) is to the right. All passing is to the right.

How do I approach roundabouts (traffic circles/circuses)?

One is driving on the left, correct? So, stay to the left when entering a traffic circle; that is, drive in a clockwise direction. Yield the right of way ("give way") to vehicles already within the circle. Enter only when the way is clear from the right; "give way to the right." Once in the roundabout, exits are always made to the left, into the first lane, in order to keep one on the left. If there are multiple lanes within a traffic circle, use the simplest path of travel by remaining to the far left if mandatory traffic controls allow. If one becomes confused, continue to drive within the traffic circle until the confusion or the number of other vehicles diminish. This is no place for a hasty, and wrong, exit maneuver.

How do I regard pedestrians?

All persons within a pedestrian crossing have the right of way. Assume, and drive, as if all pedestrians have the right of way while any are encountered on any roadway.

Why Do I need Supplemental Liability Insurance?

Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) increases your liability coverage to
amount specified on your policy, normally $500,000 or $1 million combined
single limit for any one accident. It is primary coverage and protects your
personal assets and prevents your personal auto policy from being
responsible for anything below the policy limit. SLI covers injuries to
persons and property you damage while driving the rented car. It does not
cover you or passengers in the rented car. A customer without proof of
Liability Insurance may be required to purchase Supplemental Liability
Insurance.

What Basic Insurance Coverage Does Payless Provide?

Every Payless vehicle is covered by liability insurance with limits up
to—but no higher than—the minimum permissible limits prescribed by the lawsof the state in which the accident occurs. Whether your personal auto
policy or our liability insurance is responsible depends on where the accident occurs. If the accident happens in the following 12 states: AZ, CA, KY, LA, MA, ME, MD, MI, MN, NE, NY, SC, our coverage is primary. In other states the loss is apportioned between your insurance company andours, or your insurance company pays the entire loss. Consult the Federal and StateGuide© to Vehicle Rental Law for details about your state.

Why Do I Need Proof of Insurance?

Every Payless car is rented on the assumption that your personal auto policy
will cover all liability claims for injuries to others that you cause. This keeps our costs down and we pass that savings on to you in the form of competitive prices.

Should I Buy Collision Damage Waiver?

When you rent a vehicle from Payless—or from any other company—you are
responsible for returning the vehicle in the same condition as when rented,
fair wear excepted. If the vehicle is damaged, you are responsible for the
cost of repairs, our loss of use of the vehicle, diminished value of the
vehicle caused by your damage to it or by repair of the vehicle, and an
administrative fee to cover our cost of processing a claim against you or an
insurance company.

To protect yourself and your insurance company from claims for damage to the
rented vehicle you may purchase for $_____ per day (See specific location
policy) a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). If you do, we will waive our right
to collect from you, or your insurance company, all, or everything over
$________ (depending on the state, see specific location policy), of damage
to the vehicle. This is the real purpose and value of CDW.

There are exclusions to CDW, such as driving while intoxicated. The
exclusions are stated on the reverse side of the rental agreement.

Will My Personal Auto Policy Cover Me?

A. Your personal auto liability policy will cover you for damage you do to
third persons and property.

B. Your personal auto policy may cover damage to our vehicle, if you
purchased collision and comprehensive coverage on your car, and then only
up to the limits of your coverage, and subject to any deductibles you may
have.

Will My Credit Card Cover Me?

A. Your credit card will not cover you for injuries you inflict on other
persons or property.

B. Your credit card may cover your responsibility for damage to our
vehicle. However, that coverage is almost always secondary or excess to
any other coverage you might have, such as your own auto insurance policy.
In the usual case, credit cards wind up covering only the deductible on the
collision and comprehensive portion of your personal auto policy. To be
certain you must check the terms of your credit card agreement.

It is always advisable to know the coverage afforded you by your personal
auto policy and by the credit card you expect to use.
